Letter from HD EXPO CEO/Founder Kristin Petrovich Since November, our industry has experienced the serious effects of a lengthy labor dispute between the WGA and the AMPTP. What the strike and the threat of additional strikes have brought home is a profound understanding of how connected our industry really is. From page to screen and every single stage between, the industry is woven together by a series of talented and skilled people. And, when one piece of the puzzle goes off the table, the whole game changes. That’s why the resolution of these issues is increasingly critical: it’s not just about money, it’s about community. I started HD EXPO to build a community and an educational forum, it seems more necessary now than it did in 2001. We are all anxious for a beneficial outcome to the current negotiations and the upcoming SAG negotiations later this year. It is important that everyone get the opportunity to get back to work as soon as possible. In the meantime, HD EXPO remains a steadfast member of the community, offering education, information, and inspiration. We are working closely with a group of manufactures, dealers, educators, and associations to provide education free to those affected by the strike. We at HD EXPO thank you for your support and hope to continue to serve you, our community through our expos, workshops and online information. Kristin Petrvoch

The Post Group and iO Film: Tapeless from Dailies to DI, Door to Door
Looking half a block away at The Post Group’s finishing services, the companies realized that they could offer clients efficiency and cost savings by using a Film Master system to grade from 2k data when delivering HD or SD masters —and then remaster at 2k without having to re-transfer the film if the project demanded it . In October, The Post Group opened its first Film Master DI suite, implementing the system on the SAN it shares with iO Film and opened up the new tapeless pipeline between the facilities. Post Group CEO Stephen Buchsbaum said, “Film Master gives us the opportunity to offer clients full digital grading for HD TV and theatrical mastering, and for home video/DVD. With Film Master at both The Post Group and iO Film we’re able to integrate our services. We can grade for previews and HD/SD, and if a client comes back for a DI, those corrections can be tracked from SD right up to 2K, so the look is maintained without any need to re-transfer the film. It’s incredibly efficient.” The implementation also gives the companies added flexibility to have colorists from either facility work on projects at either location. Read the rest of the story...
Peter Weishar is the dean of the School of Film and Digital Media at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD ), which offers multifaceted film and digital media undergraduate and graduate degree programs. SCAD graduates are winning awards and nominations at film festivals around the world (300 to date). Weishar took time to speak to Film School Confidential from the Savannah campus of SCAD. HDE: Your background includes visual effects, writing, and teaching, what led you to Savannah? WEISHAR: I taught at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University for about 10 years before joining the Savannah College of Art and Design. At first I taught adjunct in their graduate new media program (the Interactive Telecommunications Program, “ITP”), and then I worked as a full-time professor in the undergraduate film program. I also worked for many years as a commercial artist specializing in digital media. All of my books are on 3D digital art and design. I came to SCAD because there is no other school to my knowledge that has such expansive, mature and well-integrated offerings in film and digital media. I found the opportunity to “take the reigns” of one of the best and most famous schools of its kind to be a very exciting offer. HDE: There are undergraduate and graduate offerings at SCAD, could you give us an overview of the Film program that you are in charge of? WEISHAR: SCAD is one of the largest and most accomplished visual art schools in the U.S. Every single undergraduate student at SCAD must complete a full foundations program that includes drawing and design. There are also extensive liberal arts requirements that emphasize art history and communication. As a result of the environment and curricula, many students at SCAD have developed a strong visual sensibility and acumen before they enter the major. There are great opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration throughout the college. Our film students work with others enrolled in production design, visual effects, broadcast design, performing arts and at least a dozen other majors every term. I see evidence of these collaborations in the very rich and unique visuals and viewpoints that are becoming a signature of SCAD films. Finally, there is the intangible—but very real—benefit of being part of such a large institution devoted to the arts. For four years, film students are enveloped in a community where creativity and unique forms of expression are the norm rather than the anomaly.
