Jim Matlosz is a recognized expert and one of the most experienced high speed cinematographers around; he’s been working in high speed since 1993. His long list of credits includes commercials, music videos, short films and museum installations, from McDonalds coffee all the way to Lincoln Center. In mid-2006, through mutual friends at DNA, Matlosz became involved with a public space project directed by David Michalek, "Slow Dancing." Installed on exterior panels outside of Lincoln Center during the Summer of 2007, "Slow Dancing" features magnificent hyper slow motion footage of dancers and choreographers from around the world. Helping Michalek bring his vision to fruition was a challenge on many fronts: the equipment, production, storage, and post-production all pushed boundaries of the workflow as it existed. After extensive camera tests and one false start, the team chose to use the Phantom HD camera from Vision Research. "The support that we got from Vision Research was unbelievable. The first day we used their camera, Phil Jantzen, Cinema Project Manager for Vision Research, personally brought the camera package to the set in Manhattan." Read the full article here. DamagesDP David Tuttman Streamlines The HD Process By Pauline Rogers Welcome to the world of high-stakes litigation. Patty Hewes (Glenn Close), the most revered and reviled litigator, has taken on two new challenges; a young associate, Ellen Parsons (Rose Byrne), and a new target, an allegedly corrupt CEO by the name of Arthur Frobisher (Ted Danson). This new legal thriller on FX mixes the intensity of litigation with a twist - murder. "Pilot director Alan Coulter and cinematographer Jonathan Freeman set a high bar,” says Damages series director of photography David Tuttman. “The show is sharp, intelligent, exciting and surprising. The overall look of the pilot was terrific. However, to do a series we needed to find a way to streamline the HD shooting process."

In 2004, Chris Palmer joined American University to establish the Center for Environmental Filmmaking in AU’s School of Communication. CEF was founded on the belief that environmental and wildlife films are vitally important educational and political tools. The center trains filmmakers to produce films and new media that are highly entertaining, ethically sound, educationally powerful and effective at producing social change. Along with Montana State University, CEF is one of a small handful of programs geared specifically to training conservation and wildlife filmmakers in the US. Palmer heads up CEF as its director and is also a Distinguished Film Producer in Residence at AU. An environmental and wildlife film producer, Palmer has produced over 300 hours of original, primetime and large-format programming during his 25 year producing career. His work includes "Whales," "Wolves," "Dolphins," "India: Kingdom of the Tiger," and "Coral Reef Adventure." He and his colleagues have produced Emmy winning and an Oscar nominated films, he has been honored with the Frank G. Wells Award from the Environmental Media Association and serves as President of the MacGillivray Freeman Films Educational Foundation. HDE: Chris, you’ve enjoyed such an accomplished and varied career. You have three degrees, you’ve been a Naval Officer, an energy consultant to a US Senator, an engineer, and a filmmaker. What motivated you launch a university-based program? Palmer: I love teaching and American University is a great place to teach. The students are committed to learning and the faculty is committed to the students. It’s inspiring to work with young and enthusiastic people. Also, as a member of the full-time faculty, it is still possible to produce films, write books, give speeches, perform stand-up comedy, and do all the other things I find fulfilling and rewarding. The environmental issues that the world faces today are incredibly important and CEF addresses that need. HDE: Who are your students? Are they filmmakers, journalists, conservationists? Combinations of all of the above? Palmer: My students are all those and more: filmmakers, journalists, conservationists, scientists, political scientists, broadcasters…all looking to find new and innovative ways to produce films and new media that changes the world.
