Rob Engle, Stereographer & Digital Effects Supervisor

Rob Engle, stereographer and digital effects supervisor at Sony Pictures Imageworks, most recently completed work on Beowulf 3D and continues to help develop the Imageworks’ stereoscopic pipeline.

Prior to Beowulf 3D, Engle completed supervising the adaptation of Monster Houseand Open Seasonto their 3D versions, Monster House 3Dand Open Season: An IMAX 3D Experience, respectively.Engle was responsible for leading both teams and working with Real-D and IMAX for release of the feature films.

Prior to his work on Monster Houseand Open Season, Engle was CG supervisor on the Academy Award® nominated The Chronicles of Narnia:  The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. Engle was also digital effects supervisor on the highly successful The Polar Express:  An IMAX 3D Experience, leading a team of artists in adapting the conventional 2D, all-CG holiday film, The Polar Express, for 3D. On The Polar Express, Engle was the pipeline supervisor, where his role was to coordinate activities of a number of different departments to build the pipeline needed for Imageworks’ first all-CG feature.

Since joining Imageworks, Engle has held numerous positions including CG supervisor on Peter Pan and Charlie’s Angels:  Full Throttle. He headed up the R&D team for Stuart Little 2, where he was responsible for creating Stuart's avian co-stars. Engle also developed the lighting pipeline and initial R&D for the tools used to create Stuart's fur in the Academy Award® nominated Stuart Little.  In addition, Engle was the lighting pipeline lead on Godzilla, lead production software engineer on Contact and software developer for the RenderMan interface on Anaconda. Engle joined Imageworks in 1996 as lead software engineer on Imageworks’ in-house RenderMan interface.

Prior to his work at Imageworks, Engle interned in the software department at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) and worked for the Hewlett Packard Company developing the IC Computer Aided Design software used to create many of the company's computer and test equipment products.

Engle holds a masters degree in Computer Science from Stanford University and bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of Colorado.
